How do I become a member?

We love to hear from brokers and suppliers that share our vision for a fair and efficient retail energy B2B marketplace built around providing exceptional customer value. If you feel the REX community is a good fit for the objectives and values of your organization, we encourage you to submit an online membership application today.

What are the membership fees?

There are no upfront fees, subscription fees, or out-of-pocket fees for REX membership. REX is sustained through a nominal transaction fee that is included in all energy price quotes available to broker members. The transaction fee is unique to each individual energy contract based on two primary factors including:

  • Level of REX support required across the procurement lifecycle from quoting through contracting, and
  • Unique characteristics of each opportunity across a range of factors including customer size, product type, term length, geographic market, and more.

This dynamic and efficient market transaction fee model does not allow for a “price list” but is designed to ensure the availability of highly competitive pricing and services so that broker members can offer maximum value to customers. This efficient market model also results in energy rates that properly reflect the true costs of quoting and contracting each supplier option available to a customer.

What are the membership requirements?

Each membership application is carefully evaluated to ensure a proper fit REX core values and certain qualification criteria are considered in the review process:

Brokers

  • Sales and account management experience working with business accounts
  • Products and services portfolio
  • Company business plan
  • Company background check results
  • Criminal background check results (processed by 3rd party such that no sensitive information is shared with REX)
  • PUC complaint check results
  • Professional references

Suppliers

  • Company history
  • Products and services portfolio
  • Geographic markets served
  • Matrix price file format & compatibility with REX
  • Acceptance of eSignature (DocuSign) energy contracts

How long does it take for REX to process my membership application?

Broker membership applications are usually processed in 7-10 business days allowing necessary time for application review, interviews, system demonstrations, Q&A, and background checks.

Supplier membership applications have a longer processing period that typically requires 2-4 weeks and includes in-depth working sessions between a supplier and REX to review product and service details, matrix price file components, opportunities for system integration, energy contracts, commission plan structures, and more.

What kind of training is available to members?

REX operates a proprietary online learning management system for members offering comprehensive self-paced web training courses and materials covering a range of topics for broker success including:

  • Energy 101 – designed for professionals that are relatively new to the retail energy industry, this curriculum covers all the industry basics from energy deregulation to products and services.
  • State Certifications – each broker member must complete a certification course before having the ability to process opportunities in REX for each commodity (electric and natural gas) in each state.
  • REX Software Application – easy to follow tutorials on how to use the REX software application.

How and when are broker member commissions paid?

As the broker of record associated with supplier agreements, REX receives commission statements and payments for all energy contracts processed through REX. Managing separate commission statements from each supplier in different formats and under varying payment plans to ensure receipt of proper amounts is a difficult and time-consuming activity. REX manages this entire process to deliver a single consolidated commission statement to member brokers each month. Our system compares actual against expected payment amounts to identify variances. If any material variance is detected, REX contacts the supplier to research and resolve the issue as appropriate.

Broker members always receive 100% of the margin applied by a broker to an energy contract unless specified otherwise in a broker’s membership agreement. The REX commission cycle is a calendar month cycle where commission statements are electronically posted in the broker portal and payments are made via ACH transfer around the 6th day of each month. Monthly commission statements reflect all commissions received for a broker’s energy contracts from the previous calendar month.

Can I use REX but apply a commission structure under an existing contract I have directly with a retail energy supplier?

No, REX is the broker of record and manages commission paid by member suppliers for energy contracts processed through REX. Any other compensation plans an agent may already have under an existing contract with an energy supplier can’t be applied to energy contracts processed through REX. Only energy contracts processed through REX will be eligible for commissions paid by REX.

While we are confident that REX provides the highest value option through competitive rates, attractive commissions, and the lowest processing cost — you are free to work directly with energy suppliers outside of REX as it makes sense for your business.

Will my customer information be kept confidential?

Yes, all confidential broker member data is securely managed and will never be shared with another member in the system nor will any one member receive biased treatment or benefit from an unfair marketplace advantage. For example, some broker members may want to leverage upfront commission plans whenever possible and other broker members may only want to have monthly/residual commission plans available to their agents.

I have more than one agent in my brokerage firm. Can REX help me manage all of my agents?

As the Agency Manager, you have full control over the administration and management of your agents in REX.

Can I specify an override commission amount for energy contracts sold by my subagents?

Yes, as the agency manager, an override can be applied to each customer contract sold by your agents. This override is not disclosed to the agent and is included in the wholesale rates presented to the agent in REX

How does REX ensure that no single supplier has an unfair advantage in the marketplace?

All confidential supplier member data is securely managed and will never be shared with another member in the system nor will any one member receive biased treatment or benefit from an unfair marketplace advantage. This policy of prohibiting the disclosure of any commercially sensitive data also applies to NRG affiliated retail providers and special steps have been taken to physically and technologically separate REX from all NRG affiliated retail providers.

Data confidentiality and integrity through fair dealings represent core components of the NRG Code of Conduct:

How does REX electronically integrate with supplier pricing files and systems?

For matrix pricing, REX has developed technology that electronically processes daily price files provided by each member supplier. Prices are automatically activated and deactivated at times specified by each supplier. Based on the specific customer information for each opportunity (commodity, state, zone, rate class, annual usage, peak demand, etc.), REX presents the appropriate supplier pricing for analysis by broker members. This fully automated process eliminates traditional manual inefficiencies for both suppliers and brokers and ensures that accurate and active pricing is presented to brokers in determining the best options available to customers.

For custom pricing, suppliers have the option of integrating with REX through a web Application Programming Interface (API). This API options represents the fastest and most efficient method of delivering price quotes to brokers. REX resources are available to supplier members in developing and implementing API connectivity.

How can a supplier configure their REX service settings and options?

REX can be easily configured and changed as necessary to the specific service setting of each supplier member for each commodity in each state including:

  • Market Coverage – availability of service by utility area
  • Pricing Options – matrix pricing only, custom pricing only, or both matrix and custom pricing
  • Custom Pricing Eligibility – required customer energy usage for brokers to request custom pricing
  • Commission Plans – available commission plans including monthly and many types of upfront payment variations
  • CAPs/Splits – any applicable broker margin limits of supplier split levels
  • Matrix Pricing Promotions – discounts that should be applied to pricing contained in standard matrix pricing files
  • Price Expiration Time – expiration time for both matrix and custom pricing (custom pricing expiration times can also be set for each opportunity)

Can a supplier elect to not conduct business with a specific REX broker member?

Yes, a supplier may pick and choose which broker members have access to the supplier in REX at both the state and commodity level. This flexibility ensures that suppliers are able to control which broker members are able to view pricing and execute energy contracts based on any historical relationship issues that may exist between a supplier and a particular broker.

Supplier membership applications have a longer processing period that typically requires 2-4 weeks and includes in-depth working sessions between a supplier and REX to review product and service details, matrix price file components, opportunities for system integration, energy contracts, commission plan structures, and more.
